JAEH authors are asked to follow the guidelines in the
Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition of later). In addition, may we emphasize
the following:
Please use IBM-compatible versions of MS Word 2003.
Use 12 pt. Times New Roman font thorough (text and notes).
Label diskette with draft number and software used.
Insert page numbers (upper right), but use no other headers or footers.
Turn automatic hyphenation off.
Double-space all text, long quotes, and notes.
Use regular roman type (caps. and lowercase) for subheads: not
all caps.
For book title or emphasis, italicize or underline: no boldface.
CMS omits hyphens on adjectives like “Italian American” and
uses lowercase for the words “black” and “white.”
If you strongly prefer alternative practice regarding hyphenation, capitalization,
or other usages, the JAEH will try to honor your preference. Please be
consistent in usage.
Write out “nineteenth century,” “twentieth century,”
etc.
Use hypen when an adjective, omit hyphen when a noun. Thus,
“in the nineteenth century” (no hyphen), but “nineteenth-century
wars” (hypenate)
Please use the following form for these terms:
World War I, World War II, Vietnam War
Do not insert a space before an endnote number.
For publication information in book citations, the JAEH shortened citations
that omit name of publisher. Thus, use
John Q. Author, Title (Place, date), 127-28
Separate “place” and “date” by a comma, not a
colon.
When name of state appears in name of press, omit abbreviation for state,
hence “Athens: Ohio University Press”
For publication information in journal citations, please use the following
form:
Journal Name 65, no. 2 (Spring 1955): 127-28
Print manuscript single-sided.

Electronic manuscript submission guidelines

at the end of the manuscript.
c) Insert “call outs” where tables and/or illustrations should
appear,
e.g., <insert Table 1 about here>.
d) Microsoft Word is the preferred file format. Submissions as PDFs are
not acceptable.
e) Do not apply “styles” to the various levels of heading.
